Championship Boxing

November 19, 2011  |  7:30 PM  |  $50.00 and $75.00  |  Bally's Atlantic City  |  609.340.2000

imageWorld-ranked Garrett Wilson, the poster boy for good fighters with bad records, makes the first defense of his USBA cruiserweight title when he faces Chuck Mussachio in the scheduled 12-round main event Saturday evening, Nov. 19, in the Grand Ballroom at Bally’s Atlantic City.  First of seven fights will be 7.30 pm.

Wilson, 29, of Philadelphia, PA, won the vacant USBA crown April 23 at Caesar’s Atlantic City when he avenged a previous defeat by pounding out a 12-round decision over Omar Sheika, of Paterson, NJ.  Sheika had stopped Wilson in four rounds early in 2010.

A pro since 2008, Wilson (left) has a deceiving 10-5-1 record, 4 K0s.  Prior to beating Sheika, Wilson knocked out world-rated Aaron Williams in seven rounds in Williams’ backyard of Cleveland, OH.

Wilson is known as the Ultimate Warrior.  He has fought some of the best prospects on the East Coast, including Dyah Davis, Dennis Hasson, Carlos Negron and Julio Cesar Matthews.  He also boxed a draw with 18-1-1 Andres Taylor in Taylor’s backyard of Johnstown, PA, in a fight Wilson accepted on 36 hours’ notice.

Mussachio, 32, of Wildwood, NJ, is a school teacher and he is nicknamed The Professor.  He hopes to teach Wilson a lesson he will never forget.

A pro since 2005, Mussachio (right) is 17-1-2, 5 K0s.  In his last fight Dec. 12 in the same ring, he earned an eight-round decision over Theo Kruger, of Port Charlotte, FL, for his fourth win in a row.  He also defeated Tony Ferrante, of Philadelphia, PA, and Bobby Rooney, of Bayonne, NJ, in that streak..

Mussachio has lost only to world-rated Tom Karpency, of Adah, PA, via 10-round decision.

Six additional fights complete the card that includes undefeated welterweight Ronald Cruz, of Bethlehem, PA, taking on steel-chinned Anges Adjaho, of Buffalo, NY, in a scheduled eight-round contest.

Tickets priced at $50 and $75 are on sale at the offices of Peltz Boxing Promotions (215-765-0922) and all Ticketmaster outlets (800-736-1420).  They also can be purchased online at www.peltzboxing.com and www.Ticketmaster.com.

2012 AHL All-Star Classic

January 29 & 30, 2012  |  $32.00 - $52.00  |  Boardwalk Hall  |  609.348.7000  |  theahl.com

imageThe American Hockey League will bring the 2012 AHL All-Star Classic to Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on Sunday, January 29 and Monday, January 30, 2012. This marks the first-ever appearance of the AHL’s all-star showcase at a venue outside a leaguecity, and was made possible through the partnership of the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority (ACCVA), the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA), Caesars Entertainment and the AHL.

“The American Hockey League is looking forward to working with Boardwalk Hall, the ACCVA, the CRDA and Caesars to make the 2012 AHL All-Star Classic a truly special event,” said David Andrews, President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Hockey League. “The historic Boardwalk Hall will provide an incredible and appropriate backdrop for us to celebrate our league and our sport’s best young players.”

The 2012 AHL All-Star Classic, pitting the top players from the AHL’s Eastern Conference against the best of the Western Conference, will begin with the AHL All-Star Skills Competition on Sunday Jan. 29, at 3 PM; the AHL All-Star Game will follow on Monday, Jan. 30, at 7 PM.  Tickets for the 2012 AHL All-Star Classic, which include admission to both the Skills Competition and the All-Star Game, are priced at $52 for seats on the glass, $37 for lower-level seats and $32 for upper-level seats.  Tickets go on sale Monday, Sept. 12 at noon ET at the Boardwalk Hall Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, by calling 800-736-1420 or at www.ticketmaster.com. For group orders, please call 609-348-7021.

Details on other social events to take place during the All-Star Classic, including the 2012 AHL Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, will be announced at a later date.

“The AHL All-Star Classic is a great addition to the lineup of exciting sporting events scheduled to take place in Boardwalk Hall this year,” said Jeff Vasser, president of the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority. “Continuing with A-10Men’s Basketball, ECAC Hockey, high school wrestling and the AtlanticCity Boardwalk Rodeo, Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall is the perfect venue to enjoy your favorite activity.”

While this is the debut of the AHL All-Star Classic at Boardwalk Hall, the venue enjoys a life-long association with ice hockey dating back to December 28, 1929 when Ottawa faced off against the New York Rangers. The following year saw the debut of the first of Boardwalk Hall’s two home hockey teams, the Atlantic City Seagulls, who played until 1952. Following the $90 million renovation to Boardwalk Hall, the ECHL-affiliated Boardwalk Bullies took to the ice in October 2001 and won the Kelly Cup in 2003. Last year hockey was re-energized in Atlantic City as Boardwalk Hall hosted four exciting AHL and one ECHL Devils Hockey games, presented by the ACCVA and Caesars Entertainment.  2011 also showcased the two day ECAC Hockey Men’s Championship and a 6-0 victory of Yale overCornell. The March tournament was the first year of a three-year commitment for Atlantic City to host ECAC Hockey.

“Partnerships and events of this magnitude are what continue to help grow our market and position Atlantic City as the East Coast’s top entertainment destination,” said Don Marrandino, Eastern Division President for Caesars Entertainment.  “The 2012 AHL All-Star Classic at Historic Boardwalk Hall will shine the National spotlight on Atlantic City, allowing the community to showcase what a diverse entertainment destination we are.  A key tactic in the strategy of revitalizing Atlantic City is offering events such as this at a time when it is most needed.  We as a business community benefit from the thousands of fans who will choose to visit our destination during that weekend in January and we look forward to a successful start to the New Year with this great sporting event,” continued Mr. Marrandino.

The first AHL All-Star Game was held in 1942 as a fundraiser for U.S. and Canadian efforts in World War II; this will be the 18th All-Star Classic since the event was resurrected in 1995. Last year the Eastern Conference swept both nights’ events, including an 11-8 win over the Western Conference in the All-Star Game.

The 2012 AHL All-Star Classic in Atlantic City will feature the top young talent in the American Hockey League, competing in the AHL All-Star Skills Competition and the AHL All-Star Game. Of the 562 players to take part in the AHL All-Star Classic since 1995, more than 93 percent have competed in the National Hockey League, including PatriceBergeron, Brad Boyes, Dan Boyle, Daniel Briere, Brian Campbell, Zdeno Chara, Miikka Kiprusoff, Ryan Miller, Zach Parise, Bobby Ryan, Martin St. Louis, Jason Spezza, Eric Staal and Tomas Vokoun.

In operation since 1936, the American Hockey League continues toserve as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 87 percent of today’s NHL players are American Hockey League graduates, and for the 10th year in a row, more than 6 million fans attended AHL games across North America in2010-11. Through the years, the AHL has been home to more than 100 future members of the Hockey Hall of Fame.  For more information, visit the AHL online at www.theahl.com or “like” us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/theahl.

“We’re thrilled to host this event as it provides the perfect opportunity for local fans to see the best up and coming talent that hockey has to offer”, said Greg Tesone, General Manager for Boardwalk Hall. “The All-Star Game, coupled with the Skills Competition and Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, will also allow fans to interact with the players and experience the sport on a more engaging level.”

2012 'Gambler's Classic' Indoor Auto Racing

February 3 & 4, 2012  |  See Times Below  |  $5.00 - $30.00  |  Boardwalk Hall  |  609.348.7000  |  aarn.com

imageIndoor Auto Racing will return to Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall in 2012 for the tenth consecutive year under the promotion of LenSammons. Sammons has confirmed that the exciting events will be held on Friday and Saturday night, February 3 and 4, 2012.

Ted Christopher from Plainville, Conn. will return to defend the "Gambler’s Classic" title he won this past January in the headline Three-Quarter Midget division.  Christopher, the 2009 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion, also won the "Coffee Cup" TQ-Midget feature held inside the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., to sweep last winter's Indoor Racing Series. The Providence events will again be held in 2012, on Saturday and Sunday, March 10 and 11.

The Three-Quarter Midgets hit speeds upwards of 70 mph while running around a course set-up on the historic landmark Boardwalk Hall concrete floor. Feature events find a minimum of 24 cars taking the green flag providing some hair-raising action for fans. Each year professional race car drivers from many different divisions of the sport; and over 10 different states, compete at the event.  The Champ Kart and Slingshot divisions will also be included in the exciting Atlantic City race weekend. Racing will begin on Friday at 7:30 PM and Saturday at 7:00 PM. Each night will include qualifying races and a feature event for the headline division.

When Indoor Auto Racing returns to Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall in February, the fans will hear a difference. In an attempt to reduce the noise level on the headline Three-Quarter Midgetrace cars, officials will be requiring they use a specific muffler. “We’ve worked hard over the years to insure the air quality was acceptable to our fans,” said promoter Len Sammons. “Now we’re focusing on the noise level so everyone can better enjoy the exciting racing.” Each racer will be required to run the same steel 600/1000cc muffler sold by Beyea Headers for the retail cost of $100. No tampering with or modifying the muffler in any way will be allowed.  The mufflers will be available through Beyea starting August 15. The business can be reached at (315) 497-1215 and www.beyeaheaders.com. Beyea is also contributing $500 to the Len Sammons Jr. Memorial TQ  Midget Point Fund, a combined point series between the Atlantic City  Gambler's Classic and March's Coffee Cup event at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.
